Face Shapes and Hair

It's an old axiom in hair dressing circles, but a good one - let your face shape be your guide when it comes to choosing a great hair do.

Why is this so? A great hairstyle is one you can forget about. It suits you, it moves easily with you, and you don't have to keep glancing at yourself in any reflective surface to make sure it's still OK. A great 'do is like a great outfit. It defines you, it flatters you, and it goes anywhere with you - most importantly, it fits you perfectly.

The first thing to do is define your face shape. Scrape your hair back and tie or pin it out of the way. Stand in front of the bathroom mirror, face on, and use a piece of soap to draw around the shape of your face.

If the resulting shape is nearly a circle, almost as wide as it is long, you have a round face; if your round face has a pointy chin, and a is wider at the temples, you have a heart shaped face; if your pointy chin is long and your forehead a bit higher, you have a triangular face; if your jaw is around the same width as your forehead and is blunt shaped, you have a square face; if you have a long chin and high forehead, but your jaw is square, you have a long face. A face that is shaped more like an egg is an oval face.

Now let your hair down. Does your 'do suit the shape of your face? Check it out:

Round face: Big curls or a frizzy 'do will only make your face look rounder. Try hair straighteners if frizz is the problem, and go for a smooth sleek look. Long smooth hair looks great with a round face, as does an up 'do. Your face will suit wispy styles that have floaty tendrils to cut the roundness.

Heart shaped face: This a very desirable shape, as it can wear almost as many styles as an oval face. But what really looks charming are soft beautifully cut and shaped styles that are easy to care for. Pile your hair up into loose Bardot curls if it is long, go for the gamin look if it is short.

Triangular face: With a bit more forehead height than a heart shape, you can wear full or wispy bangs, or edgy textured layers. Layering will soften that high forehead and long chin - just think Jennifer Aniston.

Square face: Avoid blunt cuts, 'does that end at your jaw and anything too geometrical. A soft flowing style will suit long hair, but it needs to be shoulder length or longer. Square cut bangs are out but wispy strands will soften your look. Curls and highlights will all add softness to your look.

Long face: Unless it is layered, long straight hair will not flatter you. Short layered cuts that end around the jaw will look young and edgy, but for softness you need side swept 'dos, highlights and soft bouncy layers. High piled hair will just lengthen your face, but keep an up 'do low with layers and tendrils and you will have an elegant, classical look.

Oval face: This shape can wear just about any 'do, but sexy gamin short curls and floaty layers look wonderful on you. You can be pretty cutting edge too, trying out new 'dos as they come along.

Other face shapes should talk to their stylist about new looks, discussing how they can best be adapted to suit. Often cleverly placed highlights or color shading can make all the difference. For example, broader faces can use subtle highlights or shading a lighter hair shade closer to the face, while long shapes can highlight the tips of the hair. A good stylist will find the best way to work with your face shape, and give you a look that is totally you.
