I Dyed My Hair, But it's Fading Fast..
All hair coloring fades with time. This is due mainly to environmental factors, oxidisation, washing and heated styling. All of these factors lessen the pigments deposited in the hair with the initial coloring over time.
So What Can I Do ?
If using semi-permanent dyes, wait the recommended time before applying the same shade. Semi-permanents are far gentler than permanent dyes and are designed to fade and come out over time. They do penetrate the hair to some extent but contain far less chemicals than permanent. Most are safe to re-apply periodically as per instructions. Some are fine to be applied over the whole head, some require root touch ups only. Semi-permanents cannot lighten hair. Caution should also be applied if the hair is execptionally porous due to previous chemical processing
If you have used a permanent shade on your hair it is easy to be tempted to just keep dyeing over it whenever the color fades. This isn't really a good idea however. Permanent dyes penetrate and alter the chemical composition of the hair by depositing pigment below the outer surface. Putting your hair through this process again and again is not good for your hair.
Avoid using hot water when washing hair.
Use a mild formula shampoo. Some shampoo's can be quite harsh on colored hair (anti-dandruff varieties in particular) and can strip out a lot of the deposited pigment. Make sure you're using one recommended for colored hair.
Some volumizing related products may also help fade color faster because they are designed to open the hair cuticle which can accelerate color loss.
Hot oil treatments are also known to strip color out so avoid these also.
Use color enhancing shampoo's and conditioners, These come in all colors nowadays and work by depositing a small amount of pigment into the hair during washing and conditioning. Enough to 'pep up' the color and add a bit of shine back.
Red tones fade the quickest of all due the fact that most dyes don't have a lot of red tones in them. Again a red color enhancing shampoo/conditioner would be beneficial.
If out in the sun use hair-sunscreen.

Aveda - Black Malva Shampoo :"I bought this shampoo after putting a disastrous 99p (about $ 1.83) ‘copper tones’ rinse in my hair. (yes, I know, I deserved all I got) Anyhow when I towelled my hair dry, I resembled a Rastafarian that someone had thrown a bucket of maroon paint over as the rinse also dried out my wavy locks and left me with a disgrace of a barnet.
Stop laughing, if that is going to be your attitude, I am not going to finish this review.
It got worse before it got better, I needed a hat to put on in order to go out and get something else to get this muck out of my hair.
was going to buy another dye to put over it but the chemist, God bless ‘er (or whoever your deity of choice is) recommended that I used this shampoo to calm down the red tones and moisturise my frizzy locks.
Being partial to Aveda anyway, I agreed to give it a go.
It worked so well, I couldn’t make it up. My normally dark brown fuzzy (and now multi-coloured) hair became this luxuriant sheet of shiny waves. Even the small bits of blonde frizz that normally live around my temples after the Summer were darkened after the wash and actually looked like they did belong on my head. I had to look really carefully in the mirror to find the red streaks and I am sure when I found them I only imagined them.
The shampoo does not actually dye your hair, the change is not that dramatic, as far as I can make out, it emphasises the dominant colour in your hair and really makes it stand out under night-time lighting. For those reasons it may be worth trying one of two of the shampoos surrounding your own shade to find the one that has the effect that you like the best."
Biolage Color Care Conditioner:
"Once I had that fresh hair cut after totally destroying my hair. The Biolage products both the shampoo and the conditioner for Color Treated hair worked excellent for me.
The scent of the conditioner as well as the shampoo is fresh and clean. The smell seems to stay in your hair all day too! The conditioner is not to thick, or heavy. It's a white conditioner but it's thinner, and even though it's thinner in consistency, you still don't need to put a lot in your hair.
My hair went from being dry, brittle, and falling out of my head to vibrant healthy hair. Of course I had a good healthy hair cut to help. But my hair stopped falling out at least.
What I did was wash my hair regularly with the Biolage Color Care Shampoo, and then I put the Color Care Conditioner in my hair and left it there while I washed. When I was done with my shower, I rinsed my hair and got out. You would not believe how easily a comb goes through your hair.
Sometimes with regular conditioners that you buy on the shelves in regular stores, you will notice that you still have to fight sometimes to get a comb through your hair. But not with Biolage Conditioners!!! The Biolage products do not strip your hair or leave your hair heavy and weighed down. You will have fresh smelling, shiny, healthy hair that is easy to manage all day. "
The Biolage product line is great, and I would recommend it to anyone. The only thing is that depending on what you can afford. The Color Care Conditioner is pricey as is the shampoo. But you can usually get a good deal on the combination of both Shampoo and Conditioner. I've seen it in Wal-Mart for $22.00 and I've seen it at salons in malls for around $25.00 for both. But once you try these products, nothing will ever seem to compare, and I don't think you will want to try anything else. And just FORGET about those regular $3.00 products on the shelves in Drug Store or your local Supermarket."
