Highlights Gone Wrong
I've got dark brown hair which I've been having (until today) subtle highlights in. The problem is this time they have done them too chunky and I've come out looking like an alsatian
If I nip to Boots tomorrow and buy a dark brown dye, would it be ok to put this on my hair? I realise the highlighted bits will still show, but I'm hoping it will help tone then down a bit.
Or any other advice....?

"Have you spoken to the hairdressers about putting it right? Some finely weaved darker colour put through should break up the light bits - I would speak to them before you do anything. Most are really helpful if you aren't happy."
"However, if they won't help and they used bleach then you shouldn't really put any other colour over it, but you might be able to get away with using a semi to tone it down for now. Make sure you choose a colour with some warm tones to avoid a green shade on the lighter bits. "
"I've had experience of this - yes, you can put a tint over highlights and it should cover them adequately.
I agree though... go back and ask THEM to put it right at their expense."
"I just wanted to say that you shouldn't be ashamed to go back. A lot of people go back a day or so later, because sometimes it's only by seeing your hair in natural daylight that you realise it's all wrong. I've been back to complain before and it was a day later, they fitted me in to sort out the problem. Any good stylist will correct the problem since a lot of hairdressing depends upon a good reputation. Hope you get your hair sorted out."
"Just before xmas ****** totally ru8ined my daughters hair colour, dark brown hair wiht chocolate and red lowlights became orange highlights. She was in tears but wouldnt set foot back in the salon to complain so I bought a dark brown semi permanent in Superdrug and tried to pick up bits of the orange stripes like they do with a comb weaving, and applied colour exactly according to box and thank god it worked out brilliant, and still looks ok now. Sorry, cant remember name but when i got to looking there was not that many semi's and it def wasnt castings or Movida, nothing tone on tone, just a bog standard semi, in second to darkest brown. Color Doesn't Suit Me !
After being really impressed with the loreal colouer expert that I posted about a couple of weeks ago, I decided to use it again to dye my quite light blonde hair to a chestnut brown with honey streaks in it.
Well, I'm now auburn.
I actually love auburn hair and have always wanted it, but the trouble is it looks absolutley dreadful on me. I look completely washed out and none of my make up suits it. The actual colour of the hair is lovely but it dosent suit my skin at all as it has alot of pink in it?
So, what can I do? Can I use a lighter verision of colouer expert and try to get it back to how it was before or should I try the same chestnut colour over the top of what Ive already done and hope that it actually turns chestnut?
I look terrible and I have a really important meeting tomorrow!

"The sensible option would be to go to a good hairdresser and get them to sort it out, but note that there's only so much they'll be able to do as red is a bugger to get out (I'm still trying to get rid of mine :mad.
If you dye it again yourself, choose a brown with no red in it - you'll still find you have a red base, but the new brown should cover it up a little. Don't try anything lighter - it will just make your hair go orange!"
"Actually I think red colours don't last very long they are the first to wash out and never last very long.
Think you should put a brown temp colour over it, the ones that last between 6-8 wks.
I would personally never recommend as 'semi-permanent' they are NEVER semi!!!"
"The thing is, it seems that red colours DON'T last very long- unless of course you don't want them, then they last forever. I think that people that dye their hair red find it doesn't stay vibrant long so they have to re-dye - but they don't lose the "redness", if you see what I mean.
Anyhow, the person above is right- unwanted red is hell to get out, especially on highlights. And I totally second not trying anything lighter you will go a horrific orange shade!
You will need to put a darker brown over it if you can't go to a hairdresser. I can recommend Castings light brown (it will come out plenty dark enough) as it is very cool/ neutral and got rid of my ginger. This is classed as a semi on the box, but it will be permanent on treated hair (though it does fade). However, don't use this if you think you might want to try and go lighter/back to blondish, as you won't be able to get it out. You need to be sure!!!
Go and have a chat with a hairdresser, they will assess the condition of your hair and let you know the safest option!"
"Give your hair a couple of washes with washing up liquid, that should do the trick. Make sure you put loads of conditioner on it afterwards though. Whatever you do dont try to dye it blonde now, I tried and ended up with an orange head."
"Oh my god this exact same thing happened to me 18 months ago. Dyed "honey brown" over my rooty high-lights. Stupid rookie mistake!
Ended up ginger-auburn.And it was permanent.
Thing was I had to go to a wedding the next day and my dress was turquiose.
Worked at a place where my boss was very "footballers wives" and so she bundled me over to the hairdresser for emergency treatment
Had blonde streaks over red and looked very nice but did no end of damage.
Red is lovely but sounds like you are like me.. makes me look v washed out too... I looked ill.
